Aikido Yoshinkai Ottawa Yoshinkan Aikido

Gozo Shioda Aikido Yoshinkan Founder

Yoshinkan Aikido is the rigorous style of aikido founded by Gozo Shioda (1915-1994) after World War II.

Yoshinkan Aikido’s training methods are a product of the period of intensive training that Shioda spent as a pre-World War II student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. It is also generally closer to the original aikijujutsu from which all aikido derives than so-called "soft styles" of aikido, and has sharper, more angular movements. The emphasis placed on correct form and basic movements in addition to correct flow and timing is also distinctive of Yoshinkan aikido.

Yoshinkan Aikido has some 150 basic techniques which are practiced repeatedly: these techniques enable students to master the remaining ones, which total some 3000 overall. Weapons forms (bokken, jo, tanto) are practiced as an adjunct to the open hand techniques. Like many styles of aikido, Yoshinkan Aikido eschews competition; instead, it emphasizes personal development and self-defence.

Kimeda Sensei

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1941, Kimeda Sensei has been a professional instructor of Yoshinkan Aikido in Canada for more than 50 years.

Kimeda Sensei, Aikido Yoshinkai Canada He began his study of Aikido under both Master Shioda and Kushida Sensei at 18 years of age while he was a university student. In 1964, Kimeda Sensei brought Yoshinkan Aikido to North America. He has developed many frontiers for Aikido outside of Japan. At the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Yoshinkan Aikido, Kimeda Sensei was the only individual awarded special recognition for spreading Yoshinkan Aikido outside of Japan. Kimeda Sensei is the Chief Instructor of Aikido Yoshinkai Canada and holds the rank of 9th degree black belt. He has trained more than 350 students to black belt.

Aikido Yoshinkai Ottawa / Training at AYO Training at AYO

At AYO we aim to provide world-class instruction and training in Yoshinkan Aikido. We also aim to provide a training atmosphere that is safe, supportive, and inclusive.

Aikido techniques are applied by using your own power together with your opponent's power. This means that anyone can potentially learn how how to do aikido and derive benefit from training.

Boken Training

Aikido is a modern martial art. However, it is based on techniques and training methods that have been handed down through generations of masters and over hundreds of years. The basic style of training (called: katageiko) involves practicing basic and advanced techniques repeatedly with a partner while alternating between the roles of attacker (uke) and defender (shi'te). In this form of training there is no competition, with no resulting feelings of winning or losing. Through training in aikido we learn self-defense, develop ourselves, and learn about a tradition that paradoxically can help us to deal effectively with our hectic lives in the 21st century.
